| Since
the founding of the National Natural Science Foundation
of China in 1986, the national natural science foundation
has increased steadily, amounting to 4.6 billions during
12 years, forming a pattern of three levels of general
project, key project and major project foundations,
as well as some special funds, which have supported
nearly 50 thousand projects of different catalogues
and scales in total, effectively guiding, coordinating
and promoting the basic research throughout the country.
The national natural science foundation has become one
of the main sources for supporting the basic research.
The science foundation scheme, mainly based on the
"government appropriation, general guiding, free
application and democratic appraisal," is our
successful practice of referring to the experience
of foreign countries and utilizing science foundation
to support the basic research. It conforms not only
to the condition of China, but also to the needs of
the basic research development, displaying its great
vitality, receiving the full confirmation and favorable
opinion from the wide scientific and technological
circles. The national natural science foundation has
played and will continue to play an important role
in advancing the basic research development.
