Chinese scientists through their large scale integrated scientific investigation, systematic survey, research and prediction of the resources, environments, ecology and natural disasters, provided comprehensive basic data and exploitative schemes for the national economic development and scientific bases for the state macroscopic decision, promoting social advancement, and boosting the economic coordinative development.

   China has organized the comprehensive investigations of the Arctic and the Antarctic, accumulating a lot of basic data, and making contributions for mankind to understand and develop the polar regions in the future.

   China has compiled the state-grade common atlas, natural atlas, agricultural atlas and historic atlas, four large volumes in total, and Geological Map of China, etc. These provided important basic data for national economic construction and national defence construction. In addition, the country has also complied the national agricultural comprehensive regional division, China's forestry regional division and animal husbandry regional division, put forward the proposals for regulating the structure and distribution of agriculture, forestry and husbandry, and for establishing commodities bases.

   Scientific and technological workers in China investigated the resources, society and economy in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and accomplished the macroscopic strategical consultative research of the far-developing program for the society and economy of the region by means of systems engineering, providing scientific basis for the formulation of the program.

    Approximately 300 thousand crop strains have been collected in China. The Rice Strain Resource Appraisal Garden under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences has appraised 64,189 kinds of rice seed, which have been put into the state warehouse for long-term storage.

   Chinese scientific and technological workers have conducted relatively systematic investigations and researches to the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, Loess Plateau, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Heilongjiang River Valley, South China's tropical area, deserts, glaciers, frozen grounds, lakes, marshes, grasslands, wastelands, forests, salt lakes and ocean, etc., and compiled, written and published various atlases, and illustrative patterns, providing comprehensive basic data and exploitative schemes for the territorial administration, regional planning, ecological and environmental protections, the rational development and utilization of resources, industrial and agricultural distribution and production structure regulation.

   In order to reveal the secrets of the "World Roof", Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, Chinese scientists carried out large-scale scientific investigations and comprehensively explained the major theoretical and practical issues concerning the formation and evolution, natural environments and other regional differences, the characteristics and evolution of biota, the development and utilization of resources in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, which have enriched and developed the theories of geoscience and biology, provided scientific bases for economic construction in plateau areas, received universal attention and favorable comments from the same trade both at home and broad.
    In the comprehensive researches of the Himalayas and the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, Chinese scientists also made a number of breakthroughs, for example, several top world records created in drilling the ice core specimens in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, the growth-ring data of trees collected at an elevation over 4,500m and the world deepest high-quality 50-second deep reflective common-midpoint 15-time superimposition section obtained for the first time.
